The Middle East Association took a high level British Trade Mission to Baku from 18th to 22nd September, led by Robert Walter MP and the Association’s Feride Alp-Walter. The mission had the full support of the British Embassy Baku, the Embassy of the Azerbaijan Republic in London and the European Azerbaijan Society, and was sponsored by bmi.
The delegation comprised 20 business representatives, from the sectors of defence and security, education, IT, and banking and financial services. The mission was very successful, and delegates met potential local partners and exchanged ideas on future cooperation.
The programme included a reception at the residence of the British Ambassador, sponsored by Grant Thornton, who provide business risk services.
There is currently a strong focus in Azerbaijan on diversifying and developing the economy, which is opening up new opportunities in areas ranging from construction and tourism to technology and education. The UK has a longstanding relationship with the country and is the largest foreign investor, with BP having a major involvement. There are 170 British companies based in Azerbaijan.
