Prior to joining the MEA in October 2012, Matthew Smith spent 30 years in international management with HSBC, joining as graduate recruit in 1982, and has extensive experience in the Middle East. His career with HSBC spanned numerous geographies, including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Brunei in the Far East, France and the UK in Europe, and most recently, 3 years in the USA as Head of Strategy and Planning for North America. His Middle East experience includes early roles in Oman (Salalah and Muscat), and Bahrain. He was Chief Executive Officer for HSBC Qatar from 2000-04, and Regional Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East, based in Dubai, from 2004-05, and where he had operational responsibility and oversight for all HSBC businesses in the region. Later, as Chief Operating Officer, HSBC France, Matthew directed the successful launch of HSBC in Algeria.
Matthew holds an MA in Modern History from the University of Oxford.
